Your older loved one fell on a slippery floor in the doctor’s office or uneven pavement outside a store. He claims he is fine, but you have concerns. Could he have an injury that you don’t see? Worse, could he have an injury that you don’t see and that could seriously impact him if he doesn’t get medical treatment?

Watch for Signs of Concussion

Concussions in senior citizens, like concussions in young children, can be challenging. You may not notice the symptoms right away, and without a doctor’s examination the concussion may be left untreated. Untreated concussions can result in longer recoveries, long-term changes in the brain, and the potential for subsequent and possibly deadly head injuries to occur if precautions are not taken.

Thus, it is important to seek medical care for your loved one if your loved one:

  • Has headaches.
  • Is confused.
  • Has seizures or loses consciousness.
  • Has vision problems.
  • Has sleep disturbances or mood swings.
  • Takes blood thinning medication.

A prompt diagnosis and treatment plan can help your loved one recover more quickly and more completely.

Continue to Help Your Loved One After a Diagnosis Is Made

Recovering from a concussion is difficult. Your loved one will likely need help during the recovery period. You may be able to provide or to organize the assistance that your loved one needs and you may be able to make sure that her legal rights are protected.
