Though the snow that fell on Illinois was merely a dusting the winter storm caused multiple accidents across the state.  Though many were simple fender benders some accidents caused rollover accidents.

Why did such a small storm cause so much damage?  Lt. Jonathan Butts with the Macon County Sheriff's Office blames the chaos on quickly changing conditions and slick roads.

"The weather changed so quick, and I think a lot of drivers ran into black ice type of conditions."

Black ice is extremely dangerous and it is responsible for thousands of accidents each year.  Drivers and riders often don't see the ice which forms quickly as temperatures drop.

Of course this storm will not be the last of the season.  Butts offers some practical advice to drivers who must travel during and after a winter storm.

"..if you are not familiar with the route you are traveling on, then you need to be even more careful, especially on bridges and overpasses. "
