After months of harsh cold and snowy weather, spring officially marks the return of motorcycles to the roads. While many riders are eager to get back on their bikes, it is important to take time to refresh riding skills and focus on motorcycle safety.

Across the Midwest, many motorcyclists have not ridden in several months and may need time to readjust during their first few rides of the season. Drivers must also get reacquainted with watching for motorcycles on the road. Combined with common spring hazards such as wet pavement, potholes, loose gravel, and unpredictable weather conditions, the start of riding season can bring an increased risk of accidents.

Inspect Your Motorcycle

Before heading out for your first ride, perform a full inspection of your motorcycle. Be sure to check:

  • Tire pressure and tread
  • Breaks and lights
  • Battery and fluid levels
  • Chain or belt condition

Long periods of winter storage can affect your motorcycle’s performance and safety. Taking the time to inspect your bike before riding can help prevent mechanical issues once you hit the road.

Wear Proper Gear

Spring weather can change quickly, making protective gear especially important. Riders should always wear:

  • A DOT-approved helmet
  • Gloves and sturdy footwear
  • Protective riding gear
  • Reflective or high-visibility clothing

Dressing in layers is also recommended to help riders stay comfortable and prepared for fluctuating temperatures throughout the day.

Watch for Spring Road Hazards

Spring roads can create additional dangers for motorcyclists. Riders should stay alert for:

  • Potholes
  • Loose gravel
  • Salt residue
  • Wet pavement and debris

These conditions can reduce traction and increase the risk of accidents or injuries, making it essential to remain cautious and aware of changing road conditions.

Stay Visible

After a long winter, drivers may not be used to seeing motorcycles on the road. Riders can improve visibility by using headlights, avoiding blind spots, and using extra caution at intersections and during lane changes.

At Hupy and Abraham, supporting the motorcycle community goes beyond the courtroom. Through the firm’s ongoing “Watch for Motorcycles” efforts, community outreach, and rider safety initiatives, the goal is to help create safer roads for everyone. As more motorcycles return to the roads this spring, drivers are encouraged to take an extra second to look twice and stay aware of riders around them. That small moment of attention can make a big difference to helping prevent accidents and keeping the riding community safe all season long.
