Over the past few years, distracted driving prevention has been a national priority. However, each year thousands of distracted driving crashes still occur that result in injuries and fatalities. Could more be done to prevent distracted driving accidents in Iowa and around the nation? What is standing in the way of preventing serious crashes, painful injuries and tragic deaths?
Three Potential Roadblocks in the Fight Against Distracted Driving
Recently, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) released a distracted driving survey of the states. The survey asked each state several questions about distracting driving in general and preventing distracted driving more specifically. In response to the question, “What challenges or obstacles does your state face in the area of distracted driving?” Iowa identified three challenges or obstacles. Specifically, the state believes that the following are hindering its efforts to prevent Iowa distracted driving accidents:
- Lack of funding.
- Lack of education.
- Lack of support by enforcement.
It is currently unknown whether additional funding, education and law enforcement support would have a positive result in reducing the number of distracted driving crashes in Iowa. What is known, however, is that each year Iowans, and others traveling through our great state, are hurt by drivers who are using their cell phones while driving, texting while driving, or are otherwise distracted while driving.
