Whether or not you choose to wear a motorcycle helmet, the Milwaukee motorcycle accident lawyers at Hupy and Abraham want you to know the facts. It will likely come as no surprise to you that properly fitted motorcycle helmets help prevent head injuries, traumatic brain injuries and death. However, a recent study published in the Archives of Surgery describes another benefit of helmets.
Motorcycle Helmets Prevent Facial Injuries
Researchers looked at records from the National Trauma Data Bank and reached the conclusion that motorcycle helmets may help prevent serious facial injuries. Specifically, researchers looked at the records of more than 46,000 motorcyclists who went to the hospital after crashes and found that:
- 2,300 riders suffered eye injuries.
- 1,700 riders suffered nose injuries.
- 1,400 riders suffered bruised faces.
- 800 riders broke their jawbones.
After reviewing the data, researchers concluded that wearing a helmet could reduce these types of facial injuries by about 60%.
Facial Injuries Can Be Deadly Serious
The extent of facial injuries — like the extent of all types of injuries — can vary depending on the specific nature of the injuries. Some of the specific medical problems that may be faced include:
- Blindness.
- Difficulty eating.
- Difficulty breathing.
- Disfigurement.
- Scarring.
The extent of an injury depends on a number of factors including the force of the crash, the part of the body that was hurt and whether protective gear such as a helmet was worn.
