StartSeeingMotorcycles.org is a non-profit organization that, together with the Illinois cycle rider safety training program, works to prevent motorcycle accidents. Start Seeing Motorcycles is responsible for the banners and other campaign materials that can be seen across the state. The "Start Seeing Motorcycles" banners are intended to alert motorists of the ever increasing number of motorcyclists in Illinois.
In addition to educating the general public, the organization highlights the motorcycle rider courses provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety. Please read on to learn more about Start Seeing Motorcycles and what we can all do to prevent motorcycle accidents, injuries and fatalities across Illinois.
- Free Motorcycle Courses- The Cycle Rider Safety Training Program offers four different courses. The courses are free and available to any Illinois resident over the age of 16 who holds a valid automobile or motorcycle driver's license or permit. Classes are held both in the classroom and on a riding course. Locations for the classes are available across the state and include: Normal, Springfield, Decatur and LaSalle.
- Safety Tips- Because the Illinois (IL) DOT knows all too well that motorcycles are the most vulnerable of all motor vehicles, they strive to promote safety among both drivers and riders. Safety tips on this page include: Share the Road, Watch the No-Zones, Drive to Survive, Check Yourself and Your Bike, Watch Your Speed and Wear Proper Gear.
- Statistics- Statistics on this page are specific to Illinois. Statistics include the fact that the number of deaths of motorcycle operators and passengers in 2008 increased 31% from the total in 1999.
