February 27, 2015, marked the 30th Annual Black Excellence Awards at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. The Black Excellence Awards, presented by the Milwaukee Times, celebrates the African-Americans in the community that go above and beyond to make Milwaukee a better place. Over 900 people have been honored over the 30 years of the ceremony’s existence. More than 600 people including Hupy and Abraham President Michael Hupy attended this year’s event.

WISN 12 News Anchors Patrick Paolantonio and Melinda Davenport hosted the award ceremony. Clarence A. Johnson, from the Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity of the U.S. Department of Defense delivered the keynote address. Johnson shared a large amount of statistics that highlighted the importance and impact of diversity in various environments.

A special portion of the evening’s festivities was dedicated to honoring the “Women in the Military” – a segment that focused solely on black women of the Milwaukee community that have achieved extraordinary feats during their time serving our country.

Additionally, 11 local high school students were recognized for their outstanding academic performance, and were recipients of the Louvenia Johnson Scholarship.
