Chicago Bulls’ point guard Derrick Rose was driving his beige 2011 Bentley on the Kennedy Expressway on Tuesday afternoon, March 13, when his car was rear-ended.

Rose was driving south on the expressway and was stopped at about 4:30 p.m. for backed-up traffic near Ogden Avenue, just north of the Loop. According to police, Charles Trautwein of Dundalk, Maryland, couldn’t stop in time and ran his green Saturn into the back of Rose’s car.

Rose refused treatment from the Chicago Fire Department ambulance crew, saying that he would follow up with his own doctor at a later time. A Bulls’ spokesperson said later that vice president John Paxson had confirmed that Rose was “uninjured.”

Mr. Trautwein was not injured in the Illinois car accident. Police charged Trautwein with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Neither car contained passengers.

Monique Bond, a spokesperson for the Illinois State Police, said that although both cars were towed from the scene of the accident, they had sustained only minor damage.

Rose is the second professional athlete in Illinois to have been in a car wreck recently. Just last month, Jonathan Toews, captain of the Chicago Blackhawks and a forward for the hockey team, ran his Mercedes Benz into an elevated train post in downtown Chicago.

The staff and attorneys at the Gurnee office of Hupy and Abraham are pleased that neither driver was hurt in the crash. We would like to remind our Illinois neighbors to drive at a prudent speed consistent with the flow of traffic, and to maintain a safe stopping distance in case of sudden traffic congestion.
