When a family is enjoying a picnic, ants should be their biggest concern—not flying cars. However, one Wisconsin family’s picnic and lives were tragically after a car went off the road and landed on their picnic table.
The Madison car accident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5. Thirty-eight-year-old Jonathan Mueller and his wife, 36-year-old Amy Mueller, were enjoying a picnic dinner with their two children behind the First Business Bank Center in University Research Park. While the family members were eating their meals, a 59-year old driver drove off Mineral Point Road, went over the curb, and hit a small tree. Her car went airborne. It landed on the Mueller’s picnic table. Seven-year-old Aiden was killed and his mother was critically injured. Aiden’s father and four-year-old sister Elizabeth suffered non-life threatening injuries. The injured family members were taken to University and Meriter hospitals.
Police believe the accident may have been caused by a medical emergency. Fifty-nine-year-old Margie Whalen of Madison was found wandering and disoriented after the accident. The officer at the scene did not suspect alcohol; however, blood samples were taken. She was taken to the hospital for further testing and observations. No citations were issued.
Authorities say the family was having dinner at the table on private property across from Garner Park when the car left the road, hit a tree, and went airborne about 6 p.m. Tuesday.
