Valentine’s Day Tips to Keep You Safe

Pet Safety

Keep an eye on your pets around any Valentine's Day decorations, especially if they are prone to chewing on things. Ribbons, balloons and chocolate can all be dangerous for pets if ingested. If you're planning on having a romantic dinner at home, make sure to keep any potentially harmful foods or drinks out of reach of your pets. Alcohol, chocolate and certain types of nuts can all be toxic to animals. It is also important to be mindful of any flowers you may receive as gifts, as they could be poisonous or harmful to your pets.  If they are pet friendly, make sure to trim off thorns on roses or any other thorn-stemmed flowers before displaying where pets can reach them.

Candle and Fire Safety

Candle and fire safety is important to consider on Valentine's Day, when you may be using candles to create a romantic ambiance or using a fireplace to stay warm. When fire is present, make sure to always:

  • Check smoke detectors are working properly.

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room and do not leave them burning unattended.

  • Do not place clothing or blankets near the open flames of a candle or fireplace.

  • Inspect your fireplace and chimney before using.

Driving Safety

Be careful when driving, especially if you're going out to a romantic dinner or event. With increased traffic and possibly inclement weather during the month of February, it's important to pay attention to the road and drive defensively.

Alcohol Safety

If you are hosting a Valentine's Day party or gathering, make sure to have enough food and nonalcoholic drinks available to encourage responsible drinking and help prevent alcohol-related accidents. If you do plan on drinking, make sure to have a designated driver or use a ride-sharing service. Never drink and drive, as it puts you and others at risk.
