May is National Bicycle Safety Month.

For Drivers:

Slow down near bikes.

Driving too fast around people on bikes can cause serious injuries. Always slow down and give them plenty of space when you pass.

Share the road.

Drivers and bicyclists both need to be careful and watch out for each other. Drivers should stay alert, avoid distractions and never drive drunk or high. People on bikes don’t have the same protection as drivers in cars, so they’re more at risk.

For Bicyclists:

Practice safety in numbers.

When more people cycle, drivers tend to be more cautious around them. Studies on this phenomenon show that increased cyclist visibility prompts safer driver behavior.

Increase your visibility.

Bikers are smaller than vehicles and can be hard to spot. Increase your visibility with reflectors, lights and bright or retroreflective clothing.
