There are plenty of reasons people find themselves walking in busy traffic areas—whether it’s commuting to work, heading to an event, running errands, or simply enjoying the outdoors. No matter the reason, pedestrian safety is essential. With increasing traffic and everyday distractions, it’s just as important for drivers to stay alert as it is for pedestrians to stay aware. Serious injuries can happen such as broken bones, nerve damage, and traumatic brain injuries that can significantly impact someone’s life post accident.

One of the most important ways to stay safe as a pedestrian is to remain visible. Drivers need to be able to see you, especially in low-light conditions. Wearing bright or reflective clothing and using a flashlight or even your phone’s light can help you stand out and be noticed.

Using crosswalks and following traffic signals is another key part of staying safe. Always obey “walk” and “don’t walk” signs and stick to designated crossing areas whenever possible. Before stepping into the street, be sure to look both ways and make sure traffic has come to a stop.

Distractions are everywhere such as texting, scrolling, talking on the phone, or listening to music which can all take your attention away from your surroundings. Keeping your head up and staying aware can help you react quickly if something changes.

Weather also plays a big role in pedestrian safety, especially in the Midwest where conditions can shift quickly. Rain, snow, and fog can reduce visibility and create slippery surfaces. Slowing down and being extra cautious in these conditions can go a long way in preventing accidents.

It’s also important to watch vehicles turning through a crosswalk. Drivers are often focused on other traffic and may not immediately see pedestrians. Even if you have the right of way, never assume a driver will stop—make eye contact whenever possible before crossing.

By staying visible, alert, and cautious, you can help make every walk a safe one.
