Which Illinois counties have the worst speeding problem?

Speeding is a problem throughout the state of Illinois. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, accidents involving speeding accounted for about one-third of all accidents and more than one-third of fatal accidents and injury crashes on Illinois roads during 2018.

2018 data, which is the most current year available, is consistent with data from previous years. According to a report based on 2014-2018 information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Illinois is one of the top 10 states with a speeding problem. Approximately 40% of Illinois traffic fatalities involved speeding during the five years from 2014-2018.

Some Illinois Counties are Worse Than Others

There are more than 3,000 counties in the United States. Researchers looked at the 30 counties with the most speeding accidents from 2014-2018.

Four of the 30 counties with the worst speeding problems are in Illinois. These counties include:

  • Will County, Illinois, where 51.8% of fatal accidents involved speeding
  • LaSalle County, Illinois, where 46.8% of fatal accidents involved speeding
  • DuPage County, Illinois, where 45.1% of fatal accidents involved speeding
  • Cook County, Illinois, where 44.9% of fatal accidents involved speeding

What Makes Speeding Dangerous?

Some people discount the dangers of speeding because it happens so often. Many drivers have exceeded the posted speed limit or a safe travel speed when they are in a hurry, running late, or anxious to get to a destination.

Unfortunately, while speeding is common on Illinois roads, it is also dangerous. Specifically, a speeding driver may more likely to lose control of the car and need a greater distance to stop the car. Additionally, cars traveling at high speeds may cause more significant injuries in a crash than vehicles traveling at lower speeds.
