New Helmet Technology Replaces Foam with Fluid

Helmets are the most important piece of protective gear for motorcycle riders. Most helmet brands use foam in their construction to help them better absorb the shocks of any crashes or falls. A Canadian company called Fluid Inside is trying a different approach to helmet construction to improve their protective capabilities by replacing foam with fluid.

Produced by Fluid Inside, the helmets feature multiple pods full of fluid meant to mimic the behavior of the fluid found inside the human skull that protects the brain. They produce a variety of helmets with a different layout of pods to ensure that each situation – from skiing to motocross – has the best protection possible.

These fluid helmets are trying to provide better protection for both linear impacts and rotational force to ensure riders’ heads are protected from all angles. Fluid Inside has partnered with Fox Racing to design a new motocross helmet, the V3, which features their fluid pod technology. Expect to see this technology making its way to other helmet brands as well, since Fluid Inside was recently acquired by MIPS, maker of a variety of brain protection systems for cycling helmets.

While Fluid Inside is taking a giant leap forward in protection technology, there is still a great deal we don’t know about the products. How “reusable” these pods can be remains to be seen as helmets should always be replaced following a collision and there is no indication whether or not these pods are interchangeable.
