Improve Your Sport Bike Riding Comfort with These Six Steps

Maintaining a proper posture matters in all aspects of life and is especially essential for motorcycle riding. With most super sport-style motorcycles having a more forward-leaning riding position than most traditional motorcycles, many riders can have difficulty finding a comfortable riding position.

Discomfort while riding can cut enjoyable rides short and even pose a threat to the rider’s safety. Soreness and other pain caused by poor riding posture can distract riders from other potential hazards on the road.

Whether you’re brand new to the sport bike scene or a seasoned veteran, brushing up on the basics is always key to ensure the best possible outcome from your next ride. Following are some tips and techniques to improve your riding posture and ensure both comfort and safety the next time you get behind the handlebars:

  • Find a comfortable seating position: When getting on your bike, take some time to ensure you’re seated in a comfortable position. Position yourself atop the bike in a manner that will allow you to ride for extended periods of time without getting sore.

  • Maintain proper elbow posture: It’s important to not lock your elbows while riding and keep a slight bend in your arms to ensure your arms are more able to absorb the bumps and shocks associated with riding.

  • Hug the fuel tank with your thighs: Firmly gripping the fuel tank with your thighs can take a great deal of weight off of your hands on the handlebars and greatly reduce the possibility of wrist pain following extended periods of riding. This technique can also help riders maintain stability while braking.

  • Keep your back straight: While you shouldn’t sit upright on a sport bike, riders are advised to keep their backs straight while riding. Keeping a straight back will prevent riders from feeling the eventual soreness that is brought on by hunching and will in turn, allow them to ride comfortably for longer periods of time.

  • Stay on your toes: Resting the front part of the feet on your bike’s pegs ensures you will be able to easily shift your weight when cornering and keep your movements more in sync with those of the bike.

  • Dress for the occasion: Loose-fitting clothes are a surefire way to hate riding a sport bike. Form- fitting riding gear is encouraging, as it greatly reduces drag on the rider and helps keep you stable at higher speeds, which in turn keeps the bike stable as well.

Making a habit of these riding techniques will greatly increase your comfort and ease of riding the next time you get on your sport bike. Just as important as knowing the best riding posture is knowing who to turn to if you or a loved one is injured in a motorcycle accident.
