How to Comfortably Ride A Motorcycle with a Passenger

Motorcycle riding is often a solo endeavor, but often people who aren’t riders themselves still enjoy the motorcycle community and like to go along on rides with someone else behind the handlebars. There are many different varieties of motorcycles and some are much more passenger friendly than others, but that shouldn’t discourage riders from taking a passenger out for a spin.

Riders should know that there are many ways to make their motorcycle more accepting of passengers, and the biggest of which is the seat. While many bikes feature extended seats to accommodate two riders, the biggest issue facing passengers is back support. Riders would be wise to invest in seatbacks, or even simply a top trunk, as giving passengers something to rest their back against during the ride that will significantly improve their comfort and allow you to take passengers on longer rides.

Additionally, riders should ensure that they have adequate foot pegs or floorboards for their passengers to rest their feet on as they ride. While it may require replacing stock parts, ensuring that your passengers can easily find and use the footrests while riding will provide much needed comfort and stability. The same goes for grab bars – having bars on the sides of the bike toward the back gives passengers something to help keep them stable and comfortable while riding.

Finally, it’s most important for riders and passengers to communicate with one another. Investing in a helmet-to-helmet intercom system will allow you and your passenger to maintain a normal conversation at highway speeds. Being able to keep in constant communication with one another will ensure that should either person need to stop to adjust anything, they can convey their needs and concerns clearly and without fear of miscommunication.

Comfort and communication are key to riding safely and avoiding unnecessary risks.
