National Bicycle Safety Month

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, a time to highlight the importance of bicycle safety for both cyclists and drivers.

For Drivers:

Slow down for cyclists: High-speed collisions often result in severe injuries or fatalities for cyclists. Slow down and give cyclists the space they need, especially when overtaking them.

Traffic safety is a shared responsibility: Whether you're a driver or a cyclist, road safety requires cooperation. Drivers must remain vigilant for cyclists and never drive while distracted or impaired. Cyclists lack the same protective barriers as vehicle occupants, making them more vulnerable.

For Bicyclists:

Helmets save lives: Just as seat belts save lives in motor vehicle accidents, helmets are crucial for cyclists. Always wear a helmet to protect yourself while biking.

Safety in numbers: When more people cycle, drivers tend to be more cautious around them. Studies on this phenomenon show that increased cyclist visibility prompts safer driver behavior.

Increase your visibility: Bikers are smaller than vehicles and can be hard to spot. Increase your visibility with reflectors, lights, and bright or retroreflective clothing.
