Motorcycles are already much more fuel-efficient than cars. With gas prices at record highs, many riders are using their motorcycles as their main mode of transportation to try to save some money. Even though your motorcycle might get great gas mileage, there are a few things you can do to help make it more fuel-efficient and save money.

Maintenance: Always keep your bike in top condition. Stay on schedule with oil changes and all other maintenance that your bike’s manufacturer recommends. Regular maintenance helps your engine work at its best and gives you the best fuel economy. A clogged air filter can give you terrible fuel efficiency, so make sure you replace your air filter when needed. Proper maintenance will also keep your bike in the safest condition possible.

Tires: Make sure your tires are in good condition before riding. Keeping your tires at the recommended pressure will give you the best fuel efficiency. If the pressure is too low in your tires, it can cause drag, making the motorcycle need more fuel to move. Always go by the tire manufacturer's recommendation for tire pressure.

Throttle: While driving at high speeds or accelerating quickly can be a lot of fun, but it is terrible for your motorcycle’s gas mileage. If you ride more conservatively, you’ll notice that you’re getting much more out of your gas tank. Accelerate normally and ride at a constant speed and you’ll save money in the long run. Additionally, take the highway when you can because the constant stop-and-go of city streets will greatly decrease your fuel efficiency.

Weight: Since motorcycles are much smaller than other vehicles, any extra weight on your bike can affect your fuel consumption. Removing any unnecessary weight from your bike will make you lighter, more maneuverable and give you better gas mileage.

Do your best to make your bike more fuel efficient and you can save money in the long run. Stay safe while riding and always make sure that you’re doing the most to stay seen by others on your bike.
