Among riders and nonriders alike, July is known as Women’s Motorcycle Month. During the month, women riders in the past, present and future are celebrated as one of the fastest growing demographics in the motorcycle world. July is an important time to think about the women riders in your life and acknowledge the impact that women have had on the two-wheeled world. The current facts show just how fast women are having an impact on riding. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Women have been riding since motorcycles were available to the public, but the number of them was very small. Over the past decade, the estimated number of motorcycles owned by women has increased by over 50%.. One out of every 10 motorcycle riders is a woman. Across the United States, there are more than 1.2 million women who ride. Out of all riders in the country, women make up 14% of all riders and that is a demographic that is growing year after year.
The average age for men who ride is 48 years old, with the average age of women who ride is only 39. With younger women starting to ride, that age will continue to trend downward. Women motorcyclists also seem to be more safety-minded. 60% of women riders have taken a motorcycle safety course, compared to 42% of male motorcycle riders.
What type of bikes do women prefer to ride? Here’s how the largest categories of motorcycles break down: 34% ride cruiser-type bikes, 33% ride scooters and 10% ride sport bikes. When it comes to bike maintenance, nearly 50% percent of woman motorcyclists prefer to work on their own motorcycles.
Many events each year that celebrate women riders. Local groups gather across the Midwest including at events like the “Midwest Women’s Rider Event,” which is one of the largest woman riders events in the country, bringing people together from all around the United States.
