Summer is one of the best times to ride, but it can also be one of the most dangerous if you're not prepared for the heat. Many riders make the mistake of wearing less gear to stay cool, but exposed skin can actually leave you hotter, sunburned and far more vulnerable if you go down in an accident.
There are a number of items of riding gear that are designed to protect you, all while helping your body stay cooler. Here are a few pieces of motorcycle gear that can help keep you cool all summer.
1. Mesh Riding Jacket
A quality mesh jacket allows air to flow across your body while still providing abrasion resistance and armor where you need it most. At highway speeds, the airflow can make a dramatic difference compared to a standard textile or leather jacket. Look for jackets with CE-rated armor, large mesh panels and light-colored materials that reflect heat
2. Ventilated Gloves
Your hands are constantly exposed to the sun and wind. Mesh or perforated leather gloves improve airflow while maintaining grip and protection. They also help reduce sweaty palms, making long rides more comfortable.
3. Riding Pants
Jeans may seem cooler, but they offer very little protection. Mesh or ventilated textile riding pants provide much better airflow while protecting your legs in the event of a crash. Some pants even include zippered vents you can open or close depending on the temperature.
4. Moisture-Wicking Base Layer
What you wear underneath your gear matters just as much. Moisture-wicking shirts and leggings pull sweat away from your skin, allowing it to evaporate more efficiently and helping regulate your body temperature. Avoid cotton, which traps moisture and quickly becomes uncomfortable.
5. Keep Your Head Cool
If you choose to wear a helmet, modern full-face helmets often include adjustable vents that direct airflow across your head. Pair your helmet with a cooling skull cap or moisture-wicking balaclava to stay more comfortable on long rides. Many riders also soak an evaporative cooling head wrap in water before heading out.
6. Cooling Accessories
Several inexpensive accessories can make a big difference on especially hot days, including, evaporative cooling vests, cooling neck wraps, hydration backpacks and breathable riding socks.
The right gear allows you to stay protected without sacrificing comfort, helping you enjoy every mile safely throughout the summer.
No piece of gear can completely eliminate the effects of extreme heat. Plan rides during the cooler morning or evening hours when possible, take frequent breaks and recognize the signs of heat exhaustion before they become dangerous. Staying hydrated is just as important as wearing the correct gear.
