A motorcycle rides in a spring rain storm.

Spring weather can be unpredictable. One minute the sun is out and the next you’re riding through a cold rain shower. For motorcyclists, wet roads can create serious hazards, especially early in the season when riders are still getting comfortable again after winter.

If you get caught riding in the rain this spring, these tips can help you stay safe on the road.

Slow down and give yourself extra space. Wet pavement reduces traction and increases stopping distance, which means it takes longer to slow down or come to a stop. Leave more room between you and the vehicle ahead so you have time to react.

Watch for the slickest parts of the road. Painted lane markings, metal surfaces, manhole covers and tar snakes can all become especially slippery when wet. Try to keep your bike as upright as possible when riding over them and avoid sudden braking or turning.

Be extra cautious at the beginning of a rainstorm. The first rainfall after a dry stretch can be one of the most dangerous times to ride. Oil, dirt and debris rise to the surface and make the road even slicker until the rain has a chance to wash it away.

Sudden braking, quick acceleration and sharp turns can all cause your tires to lose grip in wet conditions. Be gentle with the throttle, brakes and steering to help maintain control.

Check your tires before you ride. Good tread depth and proper tire pressure are always important, but they matter even more in the rain. Worn tires have a harder time channeling water away and can reduce your traction when you need it most.

Make sure you can see and be seen. Rain can reduce visibility for everyone on the road. Use your headlight, wear high-visibility gear and keep your face shield or goggles clean, if you wear them. Drivers may have a harder time spotting motorcycles in bad weather, so do not assume they see you.

Wear the right gear. A quality rain jacket, gloves and waterproof boots can help keep you dry and comfortable, which also helps you stay focused. Cold, wet riders get fatigued faster and may react more slowly.

Avoid standing water when possible. Puddles can hide potholes, debris or uneven pavement. If you cannot avoid them, slow down and ride through carefully without making sudden movements.

Spring riding season is exciting, but changing weather means riders need to stay alert. A little extra caution in the rain can go a long way toward helping you get home safely.
