A group of motorcycle riders enjoy a group ride on a summer day.

June marks the start of summer in the Midwest, and for motorcyclists, that means one thing, it’s time to ride! Whether you’re cruising on a scenic road, commuting through city traffic or taking laps at a motorcycle track day, summer is one of the best times to be on two wheels.

As more motorcycles hit the road in the warm weather, here are a few key reminders for a safe and enjoyable summer riding season:

1. Remain Visible

Even in perfect weather, motorcycles can be hard to spot. Wear bright or reflective gear, always use your headlights, even during the day, and don’t assume drivers can see you. Riding visibly and defensively can dramatically decrease the chance of being in an accident and possibly save your life.

2. Mind the Road Conditions

From loose gravel to surprise summer storms, road conditions can change quickly and become hazardous. Take extra caution when riding on unfamiliar roads or during and after it rains. If you ever have concerns about road conditions or hazards, it might be best to turn around and go back the way you came to avoid an accident.

3. Ride Within Your Limits

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of summer group rides or freeing solo runs. Know your skill level and ride at a pace you’re comfortable with. Don’t try to impress anyone else, try to arrive safely. If you want to brush up on your skills, head to a motorcycle training class or track day at your local raceway. Everyone there will help you work on your riding skills and become an even better rider.

4. Stay Comfortable

Hydration, rest and focus are essential to staying safe, especially on longer rides or in hot weather. Riding while you’re tired is dangerous because fatigue affects your reaction time. If you’re not feeling 100% ready to ride, delay your ride or take a break if you’re already out on the road. It’s not worth the risk to you and others.

5. Watch Out for Others and Help Educate Them

We all know drivers need to watch for motorcycles, but as motorcyclists, we can help educate nonriders too. Share your riding experiences with friends and family, talk to them about the importance of motorcycle awareness and be a positive example on the road. Head over to hupy.com to get your free “Watch for Motorcycles” sticker and help spread the message of motorcycle awareness to everyone.

At Hupy and Abraham, S.C., we’ve spent decades fighting for riders' rights and promoting motorcycle awareness.
