Chad Kreblin Sturgis Long-Distance Motorcycle Ride

As riders, we love getting out on the open road. Taking a long-distance motorcycle trip is something that a lot of us look forward to. Even though these rides are very enjoyable, they can be exhausting. Sometimes there are obstacles that you’ll face on your trip. You should plan ahead to get the most out of your ride.

Here are four tips to help keep your long-distance ride safe and enjoyable:

  1. Ensure your bike is ready for the road. Go over all the components – lights, brakes, oil, etc. Make sure there are no issues that would cause a problem down the road. Using the T-CLOCK checklist is a good way of making sure your motorcycle is in top shape for riding. You can find more information on T-CLOCK here.
  2. Plan your stops ahead of time.  It’s always good to know where you’re going. Planning out your route will help make sure that there are enough spots for you to fuel up and that you’ll have a safe place to sleep at night. Predetermining your route can also help you save time by avoiding heavy traffic areas around busy cities or help get you around construction work zones.
  3. Carry emergency supplies. Have important supplies for both you and your bike in case of an emergency. A tool kit and tire repair pack for your bike can be a trip-saver for minor problems on the road. If you’re able to, bringing a gas container is a good idea if you’re planning on riding through an area with no gas stations. Pack a first aid kit in case of any minor injuries.
  4. Don’t rush. Take your time on your trip. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You need time to rest, stop and stretch or eat so that you’re in top riding shape. Stopping every now and then will make your ride more enjoyable. Seeing the sights and landscapes of different areas is part of what long-distance trips are all about.

Following these important tips will help make sure your long-distance motorcycle trip is fun and safe.
