AMA National Ice Race Championships

After several delays and changes in location due to warm weather, the AMA National Ice Racing Championships finally took place on February 22, 2020. Brought to Wisconsin by High Voltage, and sponsored in part by Hupy and Abraham, S.C., these races exhibited the best the sport has to offer for racing on the ice.  Twelve different classes provided fun and excitement for spectators and racers alike. Classes ranged from PW50 through Vintage and Hooligan racing, always a crowd-pleaser.

Local Weyauwega bar, The Hitching Post, provided the access to the frozen lake waters and the nearly 1/2 mile oval track, finely groomed and ready for action. Turn one was a little bumpy, evidenced by a number of slides over the snowbank in that turn, but for the most part, it track was smooth and fast.

Funds raised at this event and the other High Voltage bike events go to cancer research in Wisconsin.  It was a great day to be outdoors for a great cause and nobody left disappointed. These races were originally scheduled for Wilson Park, Milwaukee, but the venue moved north in search of colder temperatures. With at least 15 inches of ice in Weyauwega, the green light was finally given for safe racing conditions and the new national champions were crowned.
