Thanks to the support of sponsors like Hupy and Abraham, Malaika Early Learning Center successfully held its annual “Celebrate Malaika” fundraising gala. The event took place Nov. 7 at the Milwaukee Athletic Club and featured a buffet of fine food and a silent auction.

Former Milwaukee Brewer Craig Counsell and his wife Michelle served as the Honorary Co-Chairs and provided signed memorabilia for the silent auction. He also encouraged everyone to be extra generous in support of this important cause.

Malaika’s Executive Director Tamara Johnson served as the Master of Ceremonies.  A Malaika parent and alumni spoke to the crowd about how the school has made a difference in the lives of her family.  Johnson also honored two faculty members who have served through Malaika’s entire ten-year existence.

A group of Malaika children opened the program by singing a song.  This was followed by a video in which several Malaika parents explained the profound impact the school has had on their entire family.

Malaika currently serves about 100 children, beginning at infancy, and most of them are African-American. “Malaika” is a Swahili word meaning “little angel.”  The school is founded upon the belief that investing in a child’s education early in life pays dividends for the child and society later on.

The personal injury law firm Hupy and Abraham believes that supporting schools like Malaika is an important part of healing the Milwaukee community as a whole. As a leader in the community, the firm has loyally supported organizations that help children develop important life skills.

In August 2013, the law firm of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. donated backpacks for the Malaika children in support of their back-to-school event.  "It's important to take care of our community. We need to provide opportunities for our children and make sure they have a fair start in school," said Attorney Michael Hupy.
