How To Prevent Parking Lot Crashes

After turning off a high-traffic street and into a calm parking lot, you subconsciously start to think it's time to relax, right? Not so fast. Coming into a parking lot is the time to be extra cautious and vigilant. Accidents can also happen in parking lots at the same rate as on the road. Even though low-speed collisions may not be as serious as high-speed collisions, they can still result in costly repairs. Protect your vehicle and yourself by following the steps listed below.

Tips To Prevent Crashes:

Pedestrians: According to The National Safety Council (TNSC), 9% of pedestrian deaths result from vehicle backups. It is always the driver's responsibility to be aware of any pedestrians in the vicinity, even when they are not paying attention. It is also important to obey all crosswalk signs to avoid any potential accidents. Another tip you can implement is to have your foot hover over the brake pedal. Since your vehicle will naturally move forward when letting off the gas pedal, you will be able to anticipate pedestrians and stop at a moment's notice.

Backup cameras: After May 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) required that all new vehicles be equipped with rear cameras for improved safety. This is great for anyone who has purchased a new vehicle after the date. A rearview camera will allow you to see blind spots and watch out for objects and small children that you normally would have a hard time seeing. If you have an older car without a rearview camera, do not worry. You can take your car to almost any auto shop to have one installed.

Turn signals: Using your turn signals in a parking lot is a great way to let other vehicles and pedestrians know of your next move.

Parking: If you want to alleviate all risks of someone or a cart hitting your car, consider parking farther away from other vehicles. No one likes coming back to their car only to find a scratch or a ding in their vehicle. While it may be inconvenient at times, such as winter, you get better peace of mind and you're getting exercise!

Pull-throughs: If backing your vehicle out of a congested parking lot makes you uncomfortable, consider finding a spot where you can pull-through and park. You'll save yourself the trouble of needing to back out and it will be easier to spot other pedestrians.

Slower speeds: Last, but certainly not least, is to simply slow down. Parking lots can be filled with potential hazards and obstacles. Speeding will put yourself or others at unnecessary risk. Slowing down will give you more time to react and help avoid potential collisions.

Parking lots come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they can be downright confusing to navigate. Following these tips can help alleviate some of the stressors and avoid any potential accident. Continue to browse hupy.com for more resources and articles, or visit our Facebook page for up-to-date information!
