Motorhome Traveling on a Highway

Recreational vehicles (RVs) are a popular mode of travel across the United States but create a higher risk for accidents than other vehicles due to their size and maneuverability. While many enjoy taking a road trip or vacation in an RV, they are not experienced enough to operate the vehicle safely and without risk. This can lead to serious accidents with critical injuries. If you or a loved one have been involved in a collision with a recreational vehicle, contact our experienced attorneys as soon as possible.

Types of Accidents Involving Recreational Vehicles

Accidents involving RVs can be due to the same reasons as ones with other vehicles. RV drivers are often fatigued while driving on long road trips or vacations and may fall asleep at the wheel and cause an accident. Passengers may be walking around the inside of the vehicle or be distracting to the driver, making them lose focus and take their eyes off the road. In addition, the following factors can lead to accidents:

  • Driver inexperience
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Speeding
  • Not using proper safety equipment such as seatbelts or car seats

RVs are prone to the following types of accidents:

  • Rollover. Rollover accidents are the most common and can be attributed to an RV’s tall height and limited maneuverability. It can be difficult for drivers to navigate curves and other objects in their path. This can lead to the vehicle tipping and rolling over.
  • Rear-end collisions. RVs can be heavy and their weight can make it difficult to stop quickly and avoid a collision with a vehicle that has stopped in front of them. Rear-end collisions can be severe due to the force of impact of the large RV colliding with a smaller car.
  • Blind spot. RV drivers have limited visibility and many blind spots. Not seeing another vehicle close to them or attempting to pass them can make for a fatal accident.

Serious accidents can occur if the RV has not been properly maintained or if the RV is towing another vehicle or trailer. No matter what the cause, an accident involving an RV can result in devastating injuries.

Classes and Types of RVs

RV is a term used to describe a recreational vehicle that is motorized and has a space for living. There are different types of RVs such as:

  • Motorhome
  • Converted bus
  • Truck or van camper
  • Travel trailer
  • Fifth wheel

RVs can be classified according to their size and design. Classes of RVs include:

  • Class A Motorhome. A Class A motorhome is not only the most common, but can be the most dangerous type on the road. This is due to their large size, which can extend up to 45 feet long and 8.5 wide. Class A motorhomes are built on the frame of a bus and can be equipped with luxury amenities.
  • Class B Motorhome. A Class B motorhome is built on the frame of a van and are designed as campers.
  • Class C Motorhome. A Class C motorhome or a mini-RV resembles a van or truck in the front and are easier to maneuver than a full-size RV since they are built on the body frame of a van.

Common Injuries From RV Accidents

Injuries that result from an accident with an RV can vary in severity depending on the type of accident. Some accidents lead to serious, permanent injuries and others can be life-threatening. Some common injuries from RV accidents are:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Head injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Back or neck injury
  • Hip, knee, or leg injury
  • Broken bones
  • Cuts, bruises and lacerations
  • Road rash
  • Sprains

If you have been injured in an accident with a negligent RV driver, you should seek medical attention first, and most importantly, then be sure to file a police report. You will then want to contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible so that your legal rights stay protected.

Damages From RV Accidents

You could be eligible to file a lawsuit against the party who was responsible for the accident and your injuries. An experienced attorney will determine liability and will gather all necessary evidence to support your case. In addition, they will calculate the value of your case and ensure you get the compensation you deserve.

Possible damages you could recover from an RV accident are:

  • Medical costs
  • Loss of income
  • Pain and suffering
  • Out-of-pocket costs
  • Wrongful death
