Milwaukee Community Journal Brunch attendees

On August 5, 2018, The Milwaukee Community Journal held the annual Dr. Terence N. Thomas Scholarship Brunch event at Milwaukee’s Italian Community Center. The theme of 2018 is “Year of the Child,” that primarily focused on the importance of making sure younger children are prepared to start school at the appropriate level, which is notably important in at-risk neighborhoods. This year’s brunch honorees were among those in the Milwaukee community that have dedicated their lives toward bettering the experiences of local children. Monte Mabre, of Voice of the Fatherless Child, a longtime firm associate, was one of this year’s honorees. Hupy and Abraham was a main sponsor of the scholarship brunch.

The morning’s program was emceed by Shannon Sims, an anchor from Milwaukee’s TMJ-4 news station. After a procession of the morning’s honorees, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett recognized the staff of the Milwaukee Community Journal for all the work and effort it took to plan and arrange the brunch.

Margie Margolies, from “Hippy USA: Read Anywhere,” followed up and gave a summary of the organization and its goals. “Hippy” allows parents to be engaged in their child’s education and for these children to be prepared to start their schooling careers. Hippy, which is a free program, also helps solidify and develop the important parent/child bond that is crucial for this particular age range.

After brunch, the keynote address was given by Tonya C. Evans, First Lady at the Greater Mount Eagle Missionary Baptist Church. Her speech reflected on the parallels seen in the “Good Samaritan” parable and the importance that children have in the local community. She emphasized the importance to acknowledge their humanity and self-worth, and to make sure that people willing to do more than “just enough” for others.

All of these programs and organizations are efforts to assist Milwaukee children until they are able to provide for themselves securely and confidently.

Hupy and Abraham has been a sponsor of the Annual MCJ Brunch for many years. In 2016, Attorney Michael Hupy was honored for his contributions to the Milwaukee community.
