June is National Safety Month, making it the perfect time to focus on safe driving practices while on the job.

Many Americans drive as part of their daily work responsibilities, and unfortunately, doing so can come with significant risks. According to the National Safety Council, from 2011 to 2022, 35% of all work-related deaths resulted from motor vehicle crashes. In addition, motor vehicle accidents are the first or second leading cause of death across every major industry group.

Whether you're making deliveries, traveling between job sites, or driving to meet clients, keeping safety a priority can help reduce your risk on the road.

Tips for Driving Safely While Working

  • Follow your company's policies and procedures. Be familiar with your employer's driving and safety guidelines and always follow them.
  • Plan your trip in advance. Make sure you and your employer have discussed and agreed upon the route, destination, and travel schedule. A supervisor should always be reachable in case of an emergency.
  • Keep important documents accessible. Ensure the vehicle's registration, proof of insurance, and any other necessary paperwork are readily available in the event of a crash or roadside emergency.
  • Avoid driving while fatigued. Employers should not require workers to drive excessive or irregular hours. Drowsy driving significantly increases crash risk, particularly during the early morning hours when fatigue-related accidents are most common.
  •  Never use a phone or handheld device while driving. Distracted driving can have serious consequences and puts everyone on the road at risk.
