MOTORCYCLE STATS NEW RIDERS SHOULD KEEP IN MIND

Motorcycle accidents are among some of the most dangerous on the road. The lack of collision protection -- like those found in automobiles -- makes riders especially vulnerable to the dangers of crashes. The following are some statistics for riders to keep in mind next time they take to the road as they just might help them avoid what could potentially be a harmful accident.

The most obvious statistic of all is that motorcycle riders are significantly more likely to be injured or die as a result of an accident than any other vehicle passenger. Additionally, older riders are more prone to injury and death in accidents due to two factors:

  • Large cruisers preferred by older riders are more likely to roll in an accident-causing injury.
  • Older riders can be more susceptible to injury and their injuries are often more serious than for younger riders.

The largest contributors to motorcycle accidents involve speeding, alcohol use and usage of supersport bikes intended for racing as opposed to daily driving. Obeying the speed limit, staying sober and riding the right bike for the situation are three simple ways to cut the risk of motorcycle accidents significantly.

Finally, three items that greatly increase a rider’s odds of staying safe, even in dangerous situations such as accidents, are:

  • If state laws require riders wear helmets, make sure it is well-fitting and meets DOT standards.
  • Anti-lock braking systems prevent bikes from skidding during emergency braking and allow riders to brake safely in emergency situations.
  • Biking safety courses help riders prepare for what to do in an accident situation and the steps needed to avoid them altogether.

Being aware of the common causes and situations of motorcycle accidents can help riders to prepare for and even avoid crashes. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident, you may be entitled to significant financial damages.
