Having pets ride along with you may seem like a fun way to spend time together, but it can also be very dangerous. A loose animal can quickly become a distraction and a major safety risk. Here are some tips to help keep both you and your pet safe on the road.

1. Always restrain your pets
Allowing your pet to roam freely in the vehicle can be dangerous for them and for the driver. Sudden stops or a crash can lead to serious injuries. Using a harness, secured crate, or pet barrier are great options to help keep your pet protected.

2. The front seat isn’t for animals
In the event of an accident, airbags can seriously injure or even kill pets. Sitting in the front seat can also make it easier for them to interfere with the driver, creating unnecessary distractions.

3. Pets don’t like being left alone in cars
Leaving your pet in the car can cause anxiety and nervousness, especially in an unfamiliar place. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise very quickly, increasing the risk of heat stroke.

4. Take breaks on longer trips
Plan to stop so your pet can hydrate, stretch their legs, and use the bathroom. Regular breaks can help them stay calm and comfortable.

5. Cute isn’t safe – keep paws and heads inside the vehicle
Flying debris can injure their eyes, ears, or nose. Sudden stops can also throw them from the vehicle, leading to serious harm.

Traveling with pets makes any ride more enjoyable, but a loose dog or cat can become a big distraction in an instant. At Hupy and Abraham, we see how quickly crashes happen, and many of them are preventable. A little planning goes a long way toward keeping everyone safe — including your furry passenger.
