If you've been involved in a car accident, the first thing you should do is want make sure you preserve any evidence, because once that is lost, you will never have the opportunity to get it back.  Make sure you know the names of the witnesses and get their phone numbers, so if there is a question about how the accident happened, you have someone to call. 

It is also critical to get medical attention. If you’re injured, you need to follow up with a doctor and make sure they’re monitoring your care and progress to make sure your treatment is going OK. 

Once that It’s equally important to understand that the insurance company is probably going to call shortly after the accident, and want to take a recorded statement.  Never talk to the insurance company of the other driver.  They say you’re going to be in good hands, or that they are going to take care of you. The bottom line is: they’re not. 

Do not talk to an insurance company following an accident, hire an attorney.
