The most important thing a rider can do when determining what insurance to buy, is to be an educated consumer. Make sure you have enough insurance you can afford.
You do not want to find out, when you’re lying in the hospital, that you’re not going to be able to pay all of your bills because you did not have the right insurance.
There are some special nuances to bike-related policies that should be considered. Number one, if you have a lot of add-ons on your bike like extra chrome, you have to have enough insurance to cover those add-ons. Your underlying property damage limit may not be enough if you add a lot of custom items to your bike.
Number two, when determining how much insurance you should have, look to something called med pay. Med pay coverage pays for medical bills.
If you have health insurance, you may not want that coverage on your bike policy because it is very expensive and you may be able to increase your liability limits and you’re underinsured and noninsured motorist limits by getting rid of med pay
