Legend says that in 1795 Little Crow came to the area that would later be named Ashwaubenon to work for a local pioneer. One day a group of girls went berry picking and one of them didn’t come back. A search party was formed and looked for several days, but they didn’t find her. It was then learned that the young girl had been kidnapped. A war party, led by Little Crow, was organized to find her. When the time came to rescue the girl, Little Crow went in alone and brought the girl to safety. The squaws who were guarding the girl gave Little Crow cruel side looks to express their loathing and implied threats. When Little Crow, the girl, and the war party returned home there was much rejoicing and Little Crow’s name was changed to As-ha-wau-bo-my or Side Looks because of the way the squaws responded to him when he rescued the girl.
The village of Ashwaubenon is founded on a legend of bravery and named for the hero of that legend. Despite our shared history of bravery, however, personal injury accidents happen.
