How many left turns have you made today? Whether you were driving in Grover Heights, Jackson Park, or East Town chances are you made a left turn sometime today. Perhaps it was a relatively easy left turn. Maybe you had the benefit of a turn signal or oncoming traffic was light and gave you the chance to get across the intersection safely.
Or Maybe Not
Making a left turn may be the fastest way to get where you are going, but it might not be the safest way. There are a lot of factors to consider when making a left turn. Depending on how the intersection is designed a driver may have to consider:
- The amount of time he has to cross the intersection before an oncoming car comes straight.
- Whether there are pedestrians crossing the street on to which the driver is trying to turn.
- How far into the intersection to proceed and whether drivers on the cross street may be an issue.
Other things such as limited visibility may also make left hand turns particularly dangerous even though they are the fastest way to get from Point A to Point B.
What to Do If You’re In an Accident With a Vehicle Turning Left
Of course, you are not always the one turning left. What happens when someone else’s negligence while making a left turn causes you harm? In that situation you may be able to recover damages.
