Injured Dave Zien back on a motorcycle

Posted on Aug 24, 2011

Dave Zien in Wisconsin Rapids, 2009, after hitting this deer on his new 2009 Road Glide. He survived: the deer didn't.

Former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien continues to amaze his friends and extended family. He survived the Viet Nam conflict while many of his buddies never returned. He survived two decades of public service in the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate. He completed the Hoka Hey Challenge in 2010, voluntarily disqualifying himself because he felt the urge to go off course, a rules violation, to visit some monuments near the approved route. He survived over two million miles of motorcycle travel, accumulating one million miles on a single bike, his Harley-Davidson FXR. That bike is now enshrined in the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

Hupy and Abraham, S.C. sponsored his Hoka Hey Challenge and also this final quest of attaining one million miles on his FXR.  That dream was realized on April 4, 2009. Two days later, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company presented Zien with a brand new 2009 Road Glide. In March, 2011, 24 days shy of owning the new bike for two years, Zien was involved in a terrible crash in Florida resulting in the loss of his leg. He had 237,000 miles on the bike at the time of the crash. Five months after losing his leg and nearlly losing his life he's back in the seat of a Harley-Davidson, thanks to his friends at Hal's Harley-Davdison in New Berlin, Wisconsin. Here's part of this amazing story.

We wish Dave safe travels as he continues to grow his legacy as one of the motorcycle world's most interesting and unique individuals.
