On May 1, 2010, approximately 500 riders gathered in Delavan, Wisconsin, to honor the memory of Anita Zaffke who was killed by a distracted driver who was painting her fingernails just before plowing into Zaffke's motorcycle one year earlier. Greg Zaffke, Anita's son, organized the ride billed as the Black Nail Brigade Epic Memorial Ride. Black Nail Brigade is an organization Greg founded to bring awareness to the growing problem of distracted drivers.
Hupy and Abraham, S.C. supported this ride and the formation of Black Nail Brigade. We will continue to provide any assistance we can to Greg in his efforts to bring attention to the senseless deaths and injuries caused by distracted drivers.
The memorial ride ended in Lake Zurich, Illinois, just a short distance from the intersection where Anita Zaffe waited for a traffic light to change to green. Before that happened, Lora Hunt crashed into the back of her motorcycle ending a beautiful life and changing two families forever.
On May 6, 2010, a Lake County jury found Lora Hunt guilty of reckless homicide. It was argued by her defense attorney that she might have been negligent, but not reckless. Despite the nuances of legal terminology, one woman is dead and another is facing anywhere from probation up to five years in prison. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has spent well over $150,000 on a massive campaign to bring awareness to motorists that motorcyclists are on the roads. Watch For Motorcycles billboards, bumper stickers and public service announcements, paid for by the firm, are all over northern Illinois and Wisconsin in hopes that motorists will take notice and more families won't have to deal with the tragic aftermath of distracted drivers, whether negligent, reckless or otherwise.
