National Highway Traffic Safety Administration | NHTSA

The mission of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is to "Save lives, prevent injuries, reduce vehicle-related crashes." To do this the NHTSA conducts nation- and state-wide studies and collects crash data from across the nation. Armed with this information the traffic safety experts issue reports and sponsor traffic safety events to try and prevent accidents.

The following list will take you to some of the more useful pages on the NHTSA's website. Their comprehensive site is full of useful information. We see our guide as a jumping point for your own investigation into traffic safety and accident prevention.

  • NHTSA Homepage
  • Nationwide Traffic Safety Events- The events featured here include Alcohol Awareness Month, Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Day.
  • Current Notices and News Releases- From vehicle recalls to ways to protect your children in the car, the NHTSA posts their most current news items here.
  • Child Passenger Safety- Even the most conscientious parent can use some advice on the latest and most effective way to keep children safe while riding in the car. This link will take you to car seat safety ratings, installation inspection stations and more.
  • Highway Safety Programs and Grants- The NHTSA works to keep safety programs current and relevant to today's driving issues. Use this link to learn more about grants and programs in your area.
  • Latest Studies and Reports- Topics such as teen drivers, medical conditions that lead to vehicle crashes and factors of fatal single vehicle run off road crashes are covered in depth here.
  • State Data Program- Find information on crash statistics and safety programs in Illinois, Wisconsin and beyond.
  • Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration- E-mail addresses, telephone numbers and a physical address are available here. Use the toll-free number to report suspected defects in your car, motorcycle or child safety seats. The number can also be used to obtain current safety information on anything from air bags to highway safety.

The NHTSA is a federal program that examines every aspect of traffic safety. We hope that their site will help you learn more about why accidents occur and how to prevent them.
