In order to improve traffic safety and influence national policy, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) works with state and territorial highway safety offices to implement programs that "address behavioral highway safety issues". The issues that the GHSA works to improve include: occupant protection, impaired driving and speeding. Below you will find a brief overview of the GHSA and how their work improves the safety of motorists in Wisconsin and Illinois.

• State Highway Safety Offices- Though many of the offices are located within their state's Department of Transportation, others are part of other state agencies. • Toward Zero Deaths- Though it is a lofty goal, the GHSA works everyday to eliminate highway fatalities across the nation. In order to do so, their plan includes educating drivers, mandating safer vehicle standards, improving emergency medical services and creating a culture of traffic safety.
• Current Highway Safety Issues- There are many issues that negatively impact the safety of our nation's highways. Among the most important to the GHSA are: aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving, mature drivers, motorcycle safety, occupant protection, speeding and young adult drivers.
