Wis DOT- Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements in Wisconsin

We often look to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for current news on traffic safety regulations. With the advent of the new mandatory minimum law for auto insurance in Wisconsin, Wis DOT has been proactive in ensuring that drivers in Wisconsin understand the minimum policy requirements.

Auto Insurance Requirements in Wisconsin

  • Liability Insurance- As of January 1, 2010 you must carry at least $15,000 for property damage, $50,000 for the injury or death of one person and $100,000 for the injury or death of more than one person.
  • Proof of insurance- Beginning June 1, 2010, every driver in Wisconsin must be able to show proof of insurance at a traffic stop or accident. Drivers of trailers or semi-trailers do not have to show proof of insurance.
  • Fines- The fines for non-compliance include a fine of up to $10 for not carrying proof of insurance, up to $500 for operating a motor vehicle without insurance and a fine of up to $5000 for offering proof of insurance that is found to be fraudulent.
