Teenaged drivers tend to make driving mistakes on a fairly regular basis. Mostly this leads to reprimands from parents and ends there. However, due to lying after an accident, some Wisconsin teens are facing criminal charges.
According to the Mayville Police Department the roll-over accident occurred on River Knoll Drive. The occupants of the vehicle were five boys. The driver was a 16-year-old boy who had to be transported to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. The apparent injury was to his spine, however, he was soon released from the hospital after being treated for only minor injuries. One boy, a 17-year-old from Mayville, suffered minor scratches.
The accident occurred when the driver, a 16-year-old boy without a license, sped along the street in an attempt to drift on the unpaved road. According the Capt. Christopher MacNeill of the Mayville Police Department the tires caught the roadway and the vehicle flipped twice, landing upright.
The boys then moved the SUV in an attempt to cover up the cause of the accident. They claimed that a deer had caused the accident, not driver error. However, MacNeill saw through the lie.
"The tire marks didn't match the teenagers' story," MacNeill said.
The driver has been charged with driving too fast for conditions, causing injury, no valid driver's license and possibly obstruction. The passengers could also face obstruction charges and the owner of the vehicle faces a citation for permitting an unlicensed operator to drive the vehicle.
