One accident led to the other and closed a portion of Interstate 43 for about two hours last Monday on Green Bay's east side.
A 31-year-old man was riding a motorcycle from Wisconsin 54/57 to I-43 north when he failed to negotiate the curve of the ramp. Driving onto the outside shoulder, he rode over the grassy area between the ramp and the highway lanes and struck a guardrail at the highway median, GreenBayPressGazette.com said.
The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries. The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. near University Avenue, according to Green Bay Police Capt. Bill Galvin, and closed northbound lanes of I-43 and southbound lanes from East Mason Street to North Webster Avenue for nearly two hours.
A few minutes later, a vehicle driven by a 68-year-old woman struck the back of an SUV that was stopped in the outer northbound lane due to the previous accident. The impact pushed the SUV into the median where it tipped over on its side. The SUV driver, a 47-year-old man, and his 47-year-old passenger were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the vehicle that rear-ended the SUV was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries along with her 19-year-old passenger, who had minor injuries.
