Late-winter weather conditions made for a treacherous commute the morning of February 21. Overnight precipitation in the area near Wausau, Wisconsin left the roads snow-covered and slippery.
According to Sheriff’s Lieutenant Dale Wisnewski, deputies responded to nearly a dozen calls of vehicles that crashed or slid off the roads. Sadly, one of these accidents was fatal.
The fatal crash took place in the town of Marathon on Highway NN near Greenhouse Road. Officers were called to the scene at 6:38 am. A 38-year-old Weston woman, Tong Yang, drove her car across the center line. She then struck a minivan driven by Xeng Lee, 37, of Wausau. Yang’s car rolled over from the head-on collision.
Yang was unconscious and trapped in the vehicle when the officers arrived at the scene. An ambulance took her to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Yang had not been wearing a seat belt.
Lee, who was driving the minivan, had been wearing his seat belt. An ambulance took him to Aspirus Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released later in the day. Neither vehicle carried any passengers.
Lieutenant Wisnewski said that an investigation into the accident is still ongoing. Speed and the hazardous travel conditions are believed to be factors in the crash.
