Teen car accident fatalities fell dramatically in the decade from 2000 to 2011. Yet during that same time, the deaths caused by speeding teen drivers rose from 30 percent of all fatal teen crashes to 33 percent of all fatal teen crashes. In other words, speeding has continued to cause fatal teen car accidents in Iowa and around the country—and it has continued to devastate families. However, it has not gotten the attention it deserves, according to a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Why We Need to Talk More About the Dangers of Speeding Teen Drivers in Iowa

If you are the parent, teacher, or friend of a teen driver, or if you are just a concerned community member, then you may be able to make a difference. As a community, we need to start talking more about the dangers of fatal speeding accident among teens because:

  • The danger is not going away. Speeding is still a factor in about one third of fatal teen accidents.
  • The danger may be getting lost as we focus on other dangers, such as distracted driving.
  • The things that we say may save a life.

Together, we may be able to save young lives and we may be able to save families from the devastation of losing a child.
