Large crowds at a st. Patrick's day parade with a parade going through the middle of the road

St. Patrick’s Day is Thursday, March 17, with many parades for the holiday. Festivals, public events and holiday parades can all draw massive crowds, which can be dangerous if you are not aware of your surroundings.

Hupy and Abraham wants you to be safe in a crowd and aware of your surroundings. Remember these eight safety tips to stay safe in a public crowd.

  1. Identify the general layout of the event before attending and make an exit plan in case of an emergency.

  2. Stay aware of your surroundings so you can act quickly if needed.

  3. Dress appropriately including shoes that will not fall off or cause you to slow down.

  4. Charge your phone and keep it with you in case of an emergency.

  5. Move with the crowd, zigzagging to the outside, if caught in the middle of the crowd.

  6. Walk around the crowd instead of through it, if possible.

  7. Stay hydrated by drinking water before and during, if possible.

  8. Create a plan with whom you are attending about where to meet if you were to be separated.

We hope everyone has a safe and joyful St. Patrick’s Day. However, we know accidents can still happen even when you are prepared.
