A road with construction cones and signs and the words

If you are from the Midwest, you likely understand we have two seasons, winter and construction! The snow is disappearing, and the construction signs are starting to appear along roads and highways. It has been a few months since most of us have driven through construction zones, so what better time to refresh our memory than with these safety-driving tips.

  1. Stay Alert. Workers and construction vehicles may be close to the flow of traffic in a work zone. Dedicate your full attention to the roadway to help prevent an accident.

  2. Minimize distractions. Keep your eyes on the road at all times. Avoid changing the radio station, using a phone or any other distraction that will keep you from having complete focus of the road.

  3. Slow down and obey the posted speed limit. Speeding is a main cause of accidents in work zones. Fines double in work zones, so make sure to obey the posted work zone speed limit.

  4. Expect the unexpected. Be ready to drive defensively in a work zone. Construction vehicles and workers may enter your lane without warning.

  5. Avoid tailgating. Follow other vehicles at a safe distance in the event of sudden stopping. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of crash in work zones.
