A spinal cord injury may limit your senses or your ability to moveYour motorcycle accident left you badly injured, but not with the type of spinal cord injury that you often see in the movies. You are not completely paralyzed; yet, you are badly hurt. The doctor has diagnosed you with an incomplete spinal cord injury and you are left wondering how you are going to recover physically, financially, and emotionally.

Understand Your Specific Injury

Not all incomplete spinal cord injuries are the same. Some common types of incomplete spinal cord injuries include:

  • Posterior Cord Syndrome: The back of the spinal cord is injured, but the front and the middle of the spinal cord remain unhurt. People who suffer from posterior cord syndrome often have poor coordination, but maintain other functions such as sensation.
  • Central Cord Syndrome: The middle of the spinal cord is injured, but the front and back of the spinal cord remain unhurt. This may occur when the neck is hyperextended during the crash. People who suffer from central cord syndrome often lose function in their arms, but maintain leg movement.
  • Anterior Cord Syndrome: The front of the spinal cord is damaged, but the middle and back of the spinal cord remain uninjured. People who suffer this type of injury in a motorcycle crash may lose temperature control and have impaired sensations below the point of injury.
  • Brown-Sequard Syndrome: Either the left side or the right side of the spinal cord is injured, while the opposite site remains unhurt. Typically, sufferers of this condition experience loss of sensation but retain movement on one side of the body and keep sensation but lose the ability to move on the other side of the body.
  • Cauda Equina Lesion: The nerves located between the first and second lumbar region are hurt in this type of injury. Partial or a complete loss of sensation is possible.

You will need to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
