The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released information about helmet laws in each state. According to the CDC, Wisconsin ranks 46th in the nation for lives saved and economic costs saved due to helmet use.

When compared to other states in the region, both Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa had an estimated 4 lives and $8 million saved by helmet use for every 100,000 registered motorcycles. In comparison, Michigan saw 27 lives and $55 million saved, Ohio saw 7 lives and $14 million saved, and Indiana saw 6 lives and $11 million saved.

Accordingly, in June 2012 the CDC recommended that Wisconsin consider adopting a universal helmet law. Currently, not all riders are required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle in Wisconsin.
