The Cap Times reports that a three-car accident on Highway 51 occurred Thursday at around 2:45 p.m.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, Gary K. Anderson, aged 67, of Pardeeville, was driving his 2008 Toyota RAV4 northbound on Drake Road when he decided to stop to make a left turn into a driveway. As Anderson was waiting for a southbound 2004 Chevrolet Impala to pass, a third car, driven by Victoria Bennett, 40, of Poynette, tried to avoid rear-ending Anderson by braking and swerving across the median.

Bennett sideswiped the RAV4 and hit the oncoming Impala, driven by Cheryl Castillo, head-on. State Patrol Officers declared that the occupants of the car driven by Bennett and Castillo had to be extracted by Poynette Fire Department emergency crews. Castillo and two of her passengers, Judy Bienfang, aged 72, of Monona, and Luis Castillo, aged 76, of Madison, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Victoria Bennett also suffered non-life-threatening injuries, whereas Anderson was not injured.

The Wisconsin State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the accident using its Technical Reconstruction Unit.

It is very fortunate that this accident did not cause more serious injuries, as could easily have been the case. The injuries and damage were probably limited by the fact that the vehicles were driving at a relatively low speed.
