The Illinois State Senate recently voted to reject a bill that would have required children under the age of 18 to wear a helmet. Supporters of the bill believed that the bill would have reduced the cost of caring for head injury victims. They believe that the bill would have saved both money and lives.
Senator Donne Trotter, D-Chicago, sponsored the bill. His proposal, called the "child safety act" was aimed at protecting young passengers. According to the Senator passengers are usually the first to be thrown off of a motorcycle during an accident. Trotter said that the medical costs over a lifetime of someone who suffers head trauma in a motorcycle accident averages $150,000.
The bill lost on a 19-32 vote. The majority of the Senators believe that it is not the Legislatures job to mandate helmet use. State Senator Gary Forby agrees.
"How can I tell you what to do with your kids?" Forby asked. "I don't want you to come tell me what I am doing with my kids. If they're under 18 years old I want to raise them."
